Rand Reid and the Missing Gold

During a DC-4 flight from Manila to the United States with a full load of gold, two of the engines failed, causing the aircraft to lose altitude. The captain, Rand Reid, a colorful and likeable guy, elected to throw the gold overboardóbut not the crew luggage. What made everything look suspicious, a year to two after that, Reid bought a gold mine. Knowing Reid, Stich doubted that there was anything unlawful or any relationship between dumping millions of dollars of gold into the Pacific Ocean and his later acquisition of a gold mine.

Reid was once a pilot for Braniff Airlines in its early days, but left, thinking the airline would never amount to anything. But after leaving, Braniff became a major airline, which ended with its demise after deregulation of the airline industry.
